The Heart Sutra - Nalandabodhi Connecticut

The Heart Sutra

Sun., October 23, 2022
10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Mitra Karl Brunnholzl provides brilliantly clear and accessible talks on the meaning of the Heart Sutra as well as its implications for our own path to liberation. He presents the Heart Sutra  as a meditation manual that teaches us to let go and relax. Every passage in the sutra negating the existence of phenomena is like a little koan or contemplation on emptiness telling us to let go of everything. Included in these talks is a meditation instruction that involves substituting the negations in the sutra with our own personally meaningful ones such as “no job, no unemployment, no fear, no absence of fear, no house, no homelessness” and so on, in order to connect with the emptiness of our own solidified perceptions of phenomena.

By masterfully leading us step by step through the sutra, Karl’s teachings reveal to us that the wisdom of the prajnaparamita represents the essence of the Buddhist path in its entirety and shows us how to make this “instruction manual” our own.

Nalandabodhi Connecticut is offering the video recordings of this teaching online over eight Sundays in September, October, and November. There will be no video on October 30 in order to allow participants the space to attend the Treasury of Knowledge Retreat which is offered by the Contemplative Resource Center over that weekend. Each of Karl’s four talks is about two hours in length. We will be watching one half (one hour) of each talk on eight Sundays, which leaves room for discussion and questions.

Although benefiting from these teachings requires no additional reading, your understanding of the Heart Sutra can be enhanced by purchasing and reading Mitra Karl Brunnholzl’s book, The Heart Attack Sutra, which is available for purchase at a variety of locations, including at Nalanda Store.

All are welcome. Please invite others who would be interested in these teachings, especially those who are new to Buddhism and those from the younger generation.
