Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness

Sun., May 15, 2022
10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Understanding and having some experience of emptiness is an essential foundation for practicing Vajrayana, Mahamudra and dzogchen. For this reason, Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche and Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche emphasize analytical meditation on emptiness.

These talks, presented by Mitra Tyler Dewar at the 16th Treasury of Knowledge Retreat, are based on verses composed by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtzo Rinpoche. In these verses, Rinpoche presents the view, meditation, conduct, and fruition for each of the five stages of analytical meditation on emptiness included in his book, Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness.

Mitra Tyler provides an overview of analytical meditation and techniques and then presents one session for each of the five stages, teaching the basic reasoning and logic for each stage and providing practice tools for each stage. Mitra Tyler’s teachings are extremely accessible, clear, detailed, and profound. These talks provide an excellent foundation for analytical meditation practice at home.

Nalandabodhi Connecticut is offering the video recordings of this teaching online over five Sundays in April and May. The first five talks will be offered on Sunday mornings. The final talk will be provided to participants to view on their own. Each talk is about one hour in length, which leaves room for discussion and question every Sunday.

We will not offer a video teaching session on Sunday, April 24 because Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche will be teaching the final day of the Be Wise, Go Kind Retreat. You can learn more about this retreat at bewisegokind. org.

If you plan to attend these teachings, your understanding of the material will be much improved if you purchase and refer to Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso’s book, Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness. This book is available at a variety of locations, including Nalanda Store.

In order to join these video sessions, contact Deborah Calloway ( and ask to be added to the NBCT email mailing list. Links to our video offerings are provided in emails sent to our mailing list.

All are welcome. This is an unrestricted recording. Please let others who would be interested know about these teachings, especially those who are new to Buddhism and those from the younger generation.
