In his text, The Distinction Between Consciousness and Wisdom, the Third Karmapa Rangjung Dorje distinguishes the two on the basis of the yogachara view and his own practice experience. From the yogachara view, the eight consciousnesses are eight forms of confusion and the five wisdoms are their enlightened nature.
Mitra Karl Brunnholzl provides clear and engaging commentary on this text, which begins by explaining that the fundamental difference between the mind of confused sentient beings and the mind of the Buddha is recognizing or not recognizing mind’s true nature. The text first explains the eight consciousnesses as they are experienced by deluded mind. MItra Karl’s commentary together with his responses to insightful questions from the participants provides a profound view of the eight consciousnesses. In the final talk, MItra Karl teaches the verses that explain the wisdom nature of the consciousnesses. The distinction taught in this text is important to understand to inform our practice.
Nalandabodhi Connecticut is offering the video recordings of this teaching online over ten Sundays in January, February, March, and April. Each of Karl’s five talks is about two hours in length. We will watch one half (one hour) of each talk on ten Sundays, leaving room for discussion and questions..
The Third Karmapa’s text and a chart created by Mitra Karl will be provided by email attachment to participants who attend and request copies.
